CRYPTIT - the story so far..
From poundshop to prototype to print
Way back in January 2026, I was working on a TV production. The crew were playing a game during lighting breaks or spare time to keep the mood light whilst dealing with a harsh story line. It comprised of coming up with Cryptic clues for London Tube stations. so if I said 'Angry Monarch' - eventually you'd say - Kings Cross!
This became a really lovely game we'd play, So popular, we even had a dress up as a cryptic clue day - Clapham common was a proper good one! I told my daughter about it and a week or so later she told me she was playing at her work.
It occured to me, this would actually make a good board game, So on the way home one day, I dived into a pound shop and bought four quids worth of bits and pieces and a big sheet of card and set about making the prototype.
We played it at work on the Monday during lunch and had a great time.
I spoke to a games company, who advised it might be better as a simple card game and I thought, You know what - they are right! - we don't need the board, so I came up with the card version and had it play tested at a local games cafe where I provided questionnaires to help me hone in on what worked and what didn't.
After a while I thought Movies might be the one to launch first so spent the summer designing the cards. I now get to share the game with people in the hope you all
enjoy it the same way we all did.
A few ideas..
MOVIE NIGHT
Instead of deliberating or scrolling through media platforms, simply put the cards on the table, choose one and make that the film you watch!
PARTY NIGHT
Play the game but do not use the clues. Instead, act our, draw, or come up with all sorts of nonsense until someone guesses correctly
A LONG NIGHT
Eventually, I want to bring out more themes - Musical theatre, TV Box sets, Landmarks. The game can be played across multiple themes making it perfect for a longer Cryptit evening.
